Reaching the Motherland
The flight was canceled due to staffing shortages, surprise! Then, our little traveler was rerouted on a completely separate flight away from her group to an entirely different city, and then onto a different airline to Ireland. The place she's wanted to visit for years.
She is just 16 years old. Alone in an unfamiliar airport, separated from her group, and pushing past 24 hours without sleep. She's my granddaughter.
Right before midnight, our family finally got the text: "Guys, I've reached the motherland." You gotta love the teenage drama in that statement. Now, we could all sleep.
You've probably seen videos of adults having complete emotional meltdowns in airports under far less pressure. She didn't do that. Instead, she learned how to overcome real anxiety, narrow her focus to understand her resources, and find safety.
She had help along the way:
- Her mom supported her over the phone, giving her space to breathe.
- Her dad reminded her that she has done hard things before and that those lessons were serving her right now.
- Her Pappy and I texted her the safest spots in the terminal and the exact words to use when asking for lounge access.
- The whole family sent encouraging words and anecdotes to keep her grounded.
Unknowingly, we were helping her do what experts call Resource Mapping. It's a systematic, visual intervention that lowers anxiety by making abstract support systems concrete.
In a study of over 20,000 people, Cambridge mental health researcher Dr. Olivia Remes found that a strong sense of control over one's life is a primary driver of mental health and low anxiety levels. Ya think? In Dr. Remes' book, The Instant Mood Fix, she shares what resource mapping can do for us, if you want to take a deep dive.
In business, loss of control is a constant. A deal goes sideways, an agent or an entire team leaves, or a valued staff member takes another position. One thing we've learned is that we can't control external chaos. We can control how we map our response and leverage support. Notice I said "map". This is a proactive process not a reactive one. Get ahead of the problem by anticipating it and mapping it. We call those SYSTEMS and MODELS. Sound familiar?
Here is how to apply resource mapping to your business this week:
1. The Agent Strategy: Map Your Support Before the Crisis
When a transaction starts falling apart or a client panics, your brain naturally defaults to threat mode. You feel isolated, overwhelmed, and out of control.
Don't wait for a crisis to look for solutions. Map the operational and emotional resources ahead of time.
If your hardest transaction went completely sideways right now, do you know your exact support system? Who is your go-to broker for contract strategy? Which lender can jump in to solve a financing snag? Who is the peer or coach who keeps you grounded when stress spikes? Which protocol are you implementing to save the deal or terminate it to move onto the next one?
When you map your resources before you need them, you trade panic for immediate, decisive action.
2. The Leadership Insight: Giving Your Team Back Their Feeling of Control
Market Center Team Leaders and CEOs, when an agent comes into your office spiraling over a lost deal or a market shift, telling them to "stay positive" does not work.
Anxiety thrives in ambiguity. Your job as a leader is to help them regain a sense of coherence and control by making their hidden support systems visual and concrete.
In your coaching sessions this week, help your agents break down their immediate challenges into four distinct resource buckets: Internal Skills, Operational Tools, Personal Network, and Leadership Support.
When you guide an agent to visually map what is actually within their control, you instantly reduce their anxiety and return them to productive lead generation.
The Weekly Challenge
Ask yourself:
"Have I mapped my available resources, or am I trying to navigate this airport alone?"
Identify your top three support resources for that specific challenge and put them on paper today. Then, implement your strategies via your 411. Break it down so it's easy to follow.
Hit reply and type MAP if you would like me to send over our quick 1-page Resource Mapping Handout to help you or your agents visually map out your support systems step-by-step.
